Research - Competitors
To understand the Opal app's strengths and weaknesses, we conducted a comparative analysis with our Sydney-based team memebers, who are regular public transport users.
We also examined 14 competing apps to identify promising features and functionalities.
By analysing both the Opal app and its alternatives, we compiled a list of potential upgrades for Opal. This included features that we admired in other apps as well as our own innovative ideas.
Research - Qualitative
We were fortunate to have TfNSW provide us with their research findings. They gathered this data by approaching people at train stations and conducting interviews.
The insights below that they shared with us was invaluable in guiding our design ideas.

Reflection
The TfNSW team was amazed by what we accomplished in just 4 weeks, even referring to our work as a 'North Star' for the future of the Opal app. This recognition was a powerful validation of our team’s hard work and dedication to an inspiring project.
Our initial focus was limited to trip planning, as outlined in the brief. However, after meeting with TfNSW, they encouraged us to think big and explore ambitious, "blue-sky" ideas using their existing research.
Leading a large team on this project taught me the value of structured collaboration. By creating smaller sub-teams and assigning a team lead to each, we maintained better control and streamlined decision-making. My co-lead and I received insights from each team, allowing us to make informed, final decisions. This experience highlighted that effective communication, empowerment, and resource allocation are key to successful team leadership. Clear roles and collaborative efforts not only foster accountability but also bring in diverse perspectives, elevating the quality of our work.
